Post-Election Violence: Zamfara Police arrest 57 suspects over vandalism, looting, others

The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested a total of fifty-seven suspects who allegedly took part directly or indirectly in the post elections violence, following the governorship election result in the State.

The Police also recovered some of the looted and vandalised property in connection with the post-election violence

The command noted that Police detectives led by the Commissioner of Police, Kolo Yusuf earlier arrested forty suspects and recovered some of the looted and vandalised property worth millions of Naira

The suspects were showcased to the press and later charged to court and remanded in prison.

“As a follow up to the ongoing effort, one suspect, one Yusuf Magaji, aka Mai Anguwa 60 years old and sixteen others were also arrested, recovering exhibits from them.

This was disclosed during a press briefing in Gusau, the state capital by the Police Commissioner, Kolo Yusuf.

According to him, two semi-silence generators belonging to the State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, two standing refrigerators, vandalised doors, windows, tables, chairs, electric wires and different calibres of electronics were also recovered.

Others include sets of cushion chairs, forty pieces of wrappers, burglar-proof for Windows, and pillar reinforcement rods amongst others.

“In the course of investigations, suspects confessed to the commission of the offence and further narrated how they invaded the APC Campaign offices belonging to Senator Kabiru Marafa and Senator Daniya and looted properties worth millions of Naira. Efforts are being made to arrest their collaborators and charge them to court for prosecution”

The State police spokesman further stated that a wanted notorious armed bandit, Sulaiman Balarabe, a 25 years old man was also arrested, saying that until his arrest, he had been terrorizing Zamfara State and its environs

“On 29th March 2023 at about 0330am, Police operatives while on patrol acted on intelligence information and arrested the above-named suspect who was already on the wanted list of the Police for banditry, kidnapping and other heinous crime against the good people of Zamfara State”, the statement added.

“In the course of investigations, the suspect confessed to a series of attacks and kidnappings on different communities in Zamfara State where millions of Naira were collected as ransom from the relations. The suspect who further confessed to bearing GPMG during their operations mentioned some of his allies which the police detectives are working assiduously to arrest. Discreet Investigation is ongoing”

The commissioner further said two suspects were arrested in connection with being in possession of 18 rustled cows, 3 goats and one sheep.

He gave the names of the suspects as Umar Abdullahi, Sani Musa alias Dangoda and Yahaya popularly known as chairman but now at large.

“On Friday 31st March 2023 Police Police while on patrol acted on intelligence information, intercepted and arrested three Toyota buses loaded with suspected stolen cows, sheep and goats from Dansadau to Gusau”

” On sighting the Police, suspects attempted to abandon the vehicles and exhibits to escape but they were rounded up and arrested by the Police operatives”

“Suspects are currently undergoing discreet Investigation that will lead to the arrest of their collaborators before being charged to court for prosecution.

He said a notorious armed member in Saka Suka, terrorizing Gusau by snatching handsets and other armed robbery activities was also arrested in the process.

Shehu gave the name of the suspect as Arama Lawal, a 23 years old man saying that one matchet was recovered from him as evidence.

“On Friday 31st March 2023 Police detectives while on patrol arrested one of the notorious members of Sara – Suka terrorising Gusau and its environ”

In the course of investigations, the suspect confessed how he and his collaborators in crime robbed people of their belongings, especially handsets”

“Investigation is ongoing with a view to arresting other suspects and charging them to a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution

The Commissioner of Police, Kolo Yusuf while applauding the people of Zamfara State for their unalloyed support and partnership, tasked them to sustain the synergy with the Police and other security agencies for effective service delivery.
