The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has uncovered a suspected counterfeit beverage production site in Lagos State, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
The agency disclosed the development in a post on X on Tuesday, identifying the location as Zamfara Plaza, BBA Trade Fair Complex.
It said the suspects were allegedly involved in revalidating energy drinks as well as popular wine and whisky brands.
A video released by NAFDAC showed stacks of blue cans of Bullet energy drink piled up in a storage area, with loose cans and cardboard cartons scattered nearby.
The footage also captured a large blue plastic barrel containing discarded materials and two men sitting on the floor against a wall.
Other scenes showed empty alcoholic beverage bottles, bottle caps, corks, labels and packaging materials spread across the floor, with some stored in boxes and bags.
A bottle of Martell cognac was visible among the items, while plastic bags containing caps and seals, printed labels and other packaging materials were displayed in what appeared to be an improvised production area.
NAFDAC said the two suspects were apprehended at the facility over their alleged involvement in the revalidation of energy drinks, wines and whisky brands.
The discovery comes amid calls for stronger surveillance and regulatory enforcement to prevent counterfeit and substandard products from reaching consumers in Nigeria.
Concerns have also been raised over the safety and authenticity of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages sold in the country, particularly products allegedly repackaged or relabelled without appropriate regulatory supervision.
NAFDAC is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals and packaged water in Nigeria.
