Falconets reach semis, table tennis teams outclass opponents

Nigeria U-20 women’s team have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2019 African Games after playing a 1-1 draw against Cameroon in their second group game at Stade des Chenes on Wednesday evening.

The Falconets earlier secured the three points and three goals from their win over South Africa.

The Nigerian team amassed seven points, after teams in Group B were given automatic three points as a result of Zambia’s withdrawal from the competition.

Nigeria are in Group B with Cameroon, South Africa and Zambia.

This is as Nigeria’s table tennis teams outclassed their opponents by winning all their games.

In their first group match, six-time Olympian Funke Oshonaike and Fatimo Bello defeated Republic of Congo’s Sabrina Mazombo and Bokockou Nejdanova 3-0 in the women’s double.

Also, Bello put in an impressive show in the final women’s group game as she beat Mafuta Ivoso 11-3, 11-3, 11-2 to seal another feat for Team Nigeria.

Cecilia Akpan also won in straight sets against Congo’s Sabrina Mazombo in the second game.

Akpan led from start to finish, taking the game 11-1, 11-5, 11-9 (3-0) to consolidate on Team Nigeria’s lead in the event.

On their parts, Segun Toriola, Jide Omotayo and Bode Abiodun opened their Rabat 2019 campaign on a good note by outclassing Kenya.

Toriola  and Omotayo secured a 3-0 victory in the doubles, while Abiodun beat Ndunda Mutua 3-1 in the next game. Omotayo completed the job with a 3-0 win.
