On Thursday, September 19, 2019, many people turned out in the streets of New York, USA to protest what they termed an unjust incarceration of Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara reporters, a former Nigerian presidential candidate and an activist. The protest started in front of the Nigerian House ( Nigerian Embassy) in New York and progressed to the front of the United Nations building.

Sowore was arrested in Nigeria on the 3rd of August, 2019 by the men of Nigeria’s security services (DSS) ahead of a planned nationwide protest on the 5th of August, 2019. The government alleges that he called for a “Revolution” against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and deemed that treasonous.  His lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN and other supporters contend, however, that his use of the word, revolution doesn’tmean armed and forceful takeover of the government as alleeged. Most other politician’s, including the President  himself, had in the past used the word “Revolution” to express a desire for change in affairs of the government and not necessarily to mean a forceful change of government.

It attracted supporters from all walks of life. There were Caucasians, Arabs, Jewish, Spanish and people of different religious, ethnic and socio political backgrounds at the protest grounds and the central thing that tends to unite them is freedom.
