Ex-DG who introduced NYSC flag, anthem, dies

The National Youth Service Corps has commiserated with the family of its fourth Director-General, Major General Edet Akpan (retd.), who died on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The NYSC noted on Monday that Akpan’s management, which lasted from 1984 to 1988, led to the introduction and institution of its flag and anthem.

The scheme’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, said in a release that Akpan’s management also established the NYSC farms across the country, which enhanced the Community Development Service of corps members.

Adeyemi said, “The NYSC DG, Brig Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, and the management received the shocking news of Major General Akpan’s transition. He was a consummate administrator who repositioned the scheme on the path of growth during his tenure as National Director – the nomenclature of the headship of the NYSC until June 16, 1993.

“He had some achievements, such as the institution of the NYSC flag and anthem, which have subsisted till this day; institution of the annual sports festival; and the establishment of NYSC farms across the country, which revolutionised the CDS.”
