Jesutega Onokpasa, Lawyer and Political Commentator, Dies
Jesutega Onokpasa, a lawyer and well-known political analyst, has passed away.
The news of his death was confirmed on Tuesday by Okezie J. Atañi, a prominent supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), via a post on his social media account.
Onokpasa, a former member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections, reportedly died under circumstances that have yet to be made public. He was an active contributor to the party’s Publicity Committee.
Over the years, Onokpasa earned national recognition for his outspoken political views and unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu. He was a frequent guest on national television, where he consistently defended the policies of the current administration.
One of his most widely discussed media appearances took place in October 2023 during a contentious exchange with Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni. Onokpasa firmly supported the government’s position during the on-air debate, solidifying his role as a vocal pro-government figure.
However, in a notable shift, Onokpasa recently withdrew his support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections. Citing deteriorating security, growing economic challenges, and what he described as a lack of appreciation for loyal party members, he criticized the President’s leadership.
In what would be his final national television appearance in May, Onokpasa made a scathing assessment of the administration, stating: “Tinubu has failed woefully in ruling Nigeria and may end up as a one-term president.”
Tributes began pouring in on Tuesday following reports of his death. Theo Abu, another prominent APC supporter, posted simply: “Jesutega Onokpasa. Rest in Peace.”
