The Fulani community in Miango District of Bassa local government area of Plateau State has cried out over alleged poisoning of eight cows and attack on some herders by local Irigwe youths in the Dan Tanko and Zogu communities of the district.
A statement issued on Thursday by the state chapter of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, GAFDAN, stated that the incident occured on Tuesday, February 18, when a group of youths which they described as local ethnic militias, attacked the herders who were going about their grazing business without provoking anyone.
The statement said after attacking the herders who fled for safety, the Irigwe youths went ahead to place poisoned fruits on the grazing field, leading to the death of the eight cows.
“On Tuesday, 18th February 2026, Irigwe ethnic militia youths attacked some of our herders in the Dan Tanko and Zogu areas of Miango district in Bassa LGA, Plateau State,” the statement said.
“After the herders fled for their lives, the Irigwe youths spread poisoned fruits on the grazing field which the cows consumed, leaving eight of them dead.”
The GAFDAN statement added that the dead cows brings to a total of 32 of such since the beginning of January.
“This unprovoked aggression on herders and their cows have been going on for a long time in different communities of the state but whenever our people react, we are labelled as the aggressors.
“We have continued to tell our people not to take the law into their hands and allow the security agencies to handle the situation. But for how long will we keep quiet and allow this injustice to continue?” the group asked?
