EFCC arrests 31 suspected internet fraud trainees in Abuja academy raid

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, April 9, 2026, arrested 31 people suspected of internet fraud at an academy in Becki Estate, Karu, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suspects included two leaders and several interns, all apprehended while undergoing internet fraud training.

The EFCC recovered phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic devices from them.

The academy reportedly confined the trainees within the facility, restricted their movements, and confiscated their mobile phones to cut them off from the outside world.

“Investigation by the EFCC revealed that some of the interns were lured all the way from Benue State by the academy proprietors with the promise of job offers, but upon settling down at the facility, were handed communication devices, computers and software, setting the stage for their training in cyber fraud,” the EFCC said in a statement on its Facebook page.

Reports also say interns who disobeyed rules faced physical punishment.

According to the anti-graft agency, the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
