Rotimi Amaechi's threat: Shehu Sani accuses Nigeria of double standards against Igbos

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has accused Nigeria of applying double standards in handling threats of political, religious, and ethnic violence, alleging that people from the South-East are treated differently.

Sani claimed that threats of civil war and other forms of violence by individuals from other parts of the country were often treated as normal by the government and the general public.

The former lawmaker made the allegation in a post on X on Sunday.

The remark comes after vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, warned that the Federal High Court judgment against the leadership of his party could trigger unrest

Recall that last Thursday, the Federal High Court in Abuja nullified the National Working Committee led by former Senate President, David Mark, in a ruling that also invalidated the process that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Mainland 98.3fm, Amaechi said: “It could cause a civil war if not properly managed.”

However, Shehu Sani criticised the remark, arguing that Amaechi’s statement shouldn’t be ignored.

He further criticised what he described as the selective, disproportionate and discriminatory manner in which the country handles issues relating to peace, security, justice and national unity.

“If anyone from any part of the country makes a threat of political, religious or ethnic violence; if anyone can make a threat of civil war; as long as he is not from the South-East, the nation and the general public treat it as normal.

“This is how the country selectively, disproportionately, discriminately, and immorally acts on matters of peace, security, justice, and national unity,” he said.
