Bandits strike another Plateau community, kill farmer

Armed bandits suspected to be Fulani militia on Monday struck the Kubon community in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, killing a farmer identified as Bitrus Dakwan.

A youth leader in the community, John Maikudi, who confirmed the incident  on Tuesday, described the attack as unprovoked and senseless, while calling on security agents to up their game and protect the community and its people, especially as it is harvest time for the farming communities in the council.

Maikudi said that in the last two weeks, the Fulani militants have been invading the community and shooting sporadically, a situation that has left the people in fear and panic.

According to Maikudi, the bandits had stormed Dakwan’s house in the night and killed him instantly.

“There was an attack in our community yesterday, and a young man, a farmer, was killed. His name is Bitrus Dakwan. He was killed following the attack in the Kubon community in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government by Fulani herdsmen,” the youth leader said.

“The young man was in his house when the attackers came and killed him. He was still mourning his elder brother, who died last month after falling sick.”

Maikudi said there would have been more killings if the villagers had not mobilized, and with the help of security agents, confronted the attackers who fled the community.

“If not for the quick intervention of the villagers who mobilized themselves with the help of security agents, the invaders would have caused more havoc in the Kubon community.

“What is happening in many Plateau communities is simply unbearable. For how long shall innocent villagers continue to be killed without anything being done to stop the invaders?” Maikudi queried.
