Britain has restated its support for the ongoing fight against insecurity in the country.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs Catriona Laing, said this when she visited the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at his palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State on Thursday.
A statement by the Public Affairs Officer of the Ooni’s Palace, Mr Moses Olafare, said the envoy also promised to strengthen Britain’s commercial and cultural relationships with Nigeria.
Catriona, who said she was thrilled by the cultural displays from entertainers at the palace, added that the Nigeria-British relationship remained strong.
“I am going to focus on three things. The first thing is to strengthen our commercial relationship by encouraging British companies to come here,” she was quoted as saying in the statement.
“Secondly, we will support Nigeria to combat her security challenges, especially in the North-East, and the third is what we are doing today, which to strengthen people-to-people relationship, especially in the area of culture,” she added.
Oba Ogunwusi, who is the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, congratulated the new British Prime Minister, Mr Boris Johnson, on his election.
The Ooni, who was flanked by his queen, Olori Naomi Ogunwusi, said he had confidence in the ability of the envoy to improve the cordial relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
