Celta in race to sign Onyekuru

Spanish outfit, Celta Vigo, have joined the race to sign Nigeria and former Everton forward, Henry Onyekuru, in the January transfer window, Sports Extra report.

Onyekuru has struggled to break into first team since his summer move to the Principality outfit, making just two starts in Ligue 1 and is yet to find the back of the net with a loan move looking likely to happen in the next winter transfer market.

The likes of Gelson Martins, Ben Yedder, Baldé and Islam Slimani are ahead of the Nigerian in manager Leonardo Jardim’s pecking order of strikers at Monaco.

Meanwhile, Turkish media outlet Ajansspor claims Vigo are on the trail of the Nigeria international but have to see off competition from Galatasaray to sign the Monaco striker.

“Henry Onyekuru on Celta Vigo, Galatasaray radar,” the website wrote.

“Celta Vigo had contacted the Monaco club for the transfer of Onyekuru.

“It is known that all three Russian clubs want to transfer Nigerian players.”

Despite his limited playing opportunities, Onyekuru is not lacking suitors with CSKA Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow also credited with an interest in the 22-year-old.

The Sky Blues alongside Espanyol and Leganes have scored the least number of goals in La Liga this season, seven in total from 13 games, and are in the relegation zone. Signing a striker is one of the club’s top priorities in January.
