Anambra shuts 12 private schools over strike

Barely 24 hours after private schools in Anambra State commenced strike over alleged extortion by the government, the state has announced the closure of 12 private schools.

The state Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof Kate Omenugha, on Tuesday accused them of engaging in irregularities.

The schools are Jubilee Secondary School, Jonjay Comprehensive Secondary School, Redemption Model Secondary School, Higher Achievers Secondary School and Spencer Secondary School.

Others are City High Secondary School, Summit Comprehensive College, Dominion Comprehensive Secondary School, Keep Looking to Jesus Comprehensive Secondary School,  Azia Comprehensive Secondary School, Star Light Secondary School, Ogbunike and Bilingual Secondary School.

Omenugha said, “It is unheard of that private schools will embark on a strike without writing to the ministry. Anambra State is the only state granting subvention to private schools. In the last administration, they were given N2.5m for laboratories, as well as buses.’’
