Tinubu laments maltreatment of childless widows

The senator representing Lagos Central in the National Assembly, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has lamented the maltreatment of childless widows in the country.

She described the situation as appalling and called for better improvement of widows’ welfare.

The lawmaker said this on Friday at the inauguration of a 10-bedroomed home for childless widows.

The facility, named “Patience Home,” is located within the premises of the New Era Youth Camp, along Kayetoro-Eleko road, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

Tinubu said the project, which was done through the New Era Foundation, was in honour of her mother, Princess Patience Ikusebiala.

She added that the home would be run in partnership with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, National Headquarters (Throne of Grace Parish).

“With varying degrees of discriminatory practices against their welfare and well-being, we can all agree that there is room for improvement in our treatment of widows,” the senator said.

She said the home would be a temporary accommodation for childless widows for a period of six to 12 months during which they would learn skills to empower themselves thereafter.

Listing skills such as fashion designing, catering, hotel management and cosmetology, Tinubu said the training would be provided by the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Skills Acquisition Centre.

At the event, the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, commended Tinubu for helping the widows.

While inaugurating the home, the RCCG Assistant General Overseer (Admin and Personnel), Pastor Joseph Odesola, encouraged Nigerians to be solutions to other people’s problems.
