AFCON: How Eagles reacted to third-place triumph

The Super Eagles have expressed delight over their 1-0 third-place victory against Tunisia at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles wrapped up their 2019 AFCON campaign with a 1-0 victory over the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in the third-place playoff in Cairo on Wednesday to claim their eighth bronze.

The elated players took to the social media to jubilate their victory, commending fans for their support throughout the tournament.

While congratulating his colleagues, right-back Shehu Abdullahi, said, “I’m honoured to win another medal with Nigeria national team, after CHAN and Olympics medals. Congratulations.

“I am dedicating this amazing moment to you (fans) all for the support.”

Eagles attacker Samuel Chukwueze described the winning of bronze as a “Good way to end the season, so happy to represent this great country.”

On his part, midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo regretted that the team could not win the 2019 AFCON title.

“Great performance guys and I am so happy to be part of this team. Though we wanted the gold, but we unfortunately got Bronze. Thanks to every Nigerian fan for the support.”

Assistant captain of the team, Ahmed Musa said that he was “grateful” for being part of the squad that lifted the eighth bronze for Nigeria.

John Ogu, who dedicated the bronze to the fans, said, “The work was to win the Gold but we got the Bronze. I just want to say to all my supporters, this is for you all. Thank you for the genuine love shown to me in times of difficulties. I appreciate you all.”

Also, Super Eagles’ midfielder Alex Iwobi said winning bronze was a great achievement for a young team.

He said, “It’s a great achievement considering the quality of the 24 teams, especially as our team is very young.

“I am sure we are happy with this medal but hopefully we can do better in the next AFCON.

“We thank all the Nigerian fans for their support and we always want to do them proud.

“May they continue to support us as we will always do our best for them.”
