The incident happened on Sunday morning in Abangasang area of Calabar.
Witnesses said the suspect was about to rob an unsuspecting woman when luck ran against him.
When the State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrived the scene, they successfully intervened to prevent the mob from inflicting more injuries on the suspect.
Witnesses told our reporter that the police rushed him to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for medical attention.
In a statement signed by the state PPRO, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, he confirmed that the suspect died at the hospital.
“Unfortunately, the victim, yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the hospital in the early hours of this morning.”
“The victim’s body has been evacuated and deposited at the UCTH mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues.”

The PRO disclosed that the police recovered a Beretta pistol with three live 9mm rounds of ammunition and arrested some of the individuals involved in the mob attack.
He further disclosed that three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Rashid Afegbua, has described the operation as a clear demonstration of the Command’s commitment to crime prevention, protection of lives, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
He strongly condemned mob action and emphasized that suspects apprehended by private individuals must always be handed over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
